Ok, so more than likely your first experience of Thailand will be Suvarnabhumi airport Bangkok. I've always found the airport clean an pretty well run. Having waited at the airport through the early hours i can confirm you can get food and drink 24 hours!!
If you walk out of the airport and its the day time, this may sound obvious, you'll be hit by the humidity!!
If your staying in Bangkok itself, its easy enough to get a taxi, i would vouch for the official taxi companies, or if your on your own it is cheaper to get a bus. The airport bus goes on several different routes through the city. Its also easy to get to Pattaya, trust me people will be offering to take you everywhere!
Accomodation wise Bangkok has it all from cheap guesthouses to 5 star hotels. If your backpacking, go for the famous Khao San Road area. I always find it to be a good place to stay a couple of days before i head off elsewhere in Thailand.
The Sukhumvit Road area is also a good place to stay, with lots of shopping, restaurants and bars right on your doorstep.
